In the orthopaedic field, the use of (mesenchymal) stem cells is now an established practice for the treatment of medium to severe arthrosis. [3]
Mesenchymal cells are primitive, non-specialised cells that can transform into different cell lines; they can be harvested from bone marrow or subcutaneous adipose tissue (Fig. 1). [1]
They can be harvested either from the abdomen from which a small amount of adipose tissue is extracted, or from the iliac crest from which bone marrow tissue is harvested minimally invasively. [2] The mesenchymal cells once harvested are processed, concentrated and then injected into the joint. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia (without the patient being put to sleep) and can be completed in approximately one hour. Recovery time after undergoing the procedure is very short. The effect of the treatment is pain relief and improved joint motility. Currently, 1/2-year follow-up results of this type of procedure are available and are very encouraging, both on the knee [4] as well as on the hip [5] and shoulder. [6]
